What is Deep Learning and how does it help with Data Analytics?
Traditional analytics relies heavily on modelling. The quality of the output completely depends on what type of model is applied to the data set, as well as on the underlying assumptions that are shaped into that model - e.g. what variables are relevant, the specifics of data transformations, data scope, etc. What's more, a change the size of the data set often requires the development of a new model. Generally, there is an underlying layer of subjectivity, which manifests itself based on how the computing "is told" to operate in order to produce the output.
Deep Learning offers an entirely different approach, where the analytical model building is automated. ML goes well beyond data-mining, because instead of outputting data patterns to human analysts, it absorbs them as new input to further develop the model. Rather than feeding the system with assumptions and templates, and asking for patterns in return, we allow the machines to look for and recognize data patterns on their own, without being explicitly programmed. The machines are not told where to look for insights and the algorithms evolve as they are exposed to more data.
